PRP Hair
Hair loss can be devastating to both males and females. Treatments include medications (minoxidil, finasteride, spironolactone), laser treatments (eg. HairMax combs and helmets), surgical hair follicle transplants, and stimulation of new hair follicles by PRP (platelet rich plasma).
In the PRP Hair Re-Growth procedure, some blood is drawn from your arm and processed to isolate the portion that contains the stem cell growth factors. The area of the scalp where the thinning is occurring is cleansed and anesthetized. Then a series of 3-6 treatments, separated by a month, are given, with a single treatment every 3-6 months thereafter as needed. Results last longer and are better when a person uses minoxidil, finasteride, and/or laser treatments. For women, a greater than 80% hair re-growth is common. Results are less predictable in males
The American Academy of Dermatology has verified the effectiveness of PRP injections in re-growing hair in most treated patients.
Within our blood are platelets (thrombocytes) which play a critical role in blood clotting. They happen to contain our stem cell growth factors. When there is an injury, platelets collect at the site, and some break open and their growth factors are released. The growth factors trigger stem cells to go to the area. The stem cells are pre-programmed to make more of whatever kind of cells are in the area of increased growth factor concentration. So in the case of scalp skin, new hair follicles are made!
