Fillers

These are materials that are placed in areas of the face in which there are furrows, grooves, or general depressions. They are used to make areas fuller or fill in the groove of a wrinkle.

  • They are most commonly injected into the skin using topical or localized anesthetic.
  • The most popular fillers are temporary, lasting 4-12 months. The effect is immediate, and the downtime is often 0-2 hours. Permanent fillers are available, once you know with certainty “the look” you desire.
  • Popular fillers: Restylane, Perlane, Juvéderm™
  • Dr. Hudak has been injecting and inserting fillers since 1995, and was injecting Restylane within 3 weeks of the FDA approving it. She has many patients who can vouch for her artistry in using these wonderful adjuncts to facial sculpting and enhancement.
  • Possible complications: temporary bruising, temporary bleeding, over-correction, under-correction, cold sores, temporary redness and swelling, infection.

Restylane® & Perlane®

Restylane® or Perlane® are cosmetic dermal fillers that replace lost volume and restore youthful contours to the skin to smooth away moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds).

Restylane® and Perlane® are made of hyaluronic acid. In the human body, natural hyaluronic acid provides volume and fullness to the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® and Perlane® has been modified slightly to last longer than the body's hyaluronic acid. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane® and Perlane® is produced by a biotechnical process.

Restylane® and Perlane® are hydrophilic or "water loving." The hydrophilic nature of these hyaluronic acid molecules and their three dimensional structure allows them to bind many times their own weight in water. As hyaluronic acid begins to degrade, each molecule binds to more water which helps to maintain its volume for about six months.

Restylane® and Perlane® contain no animal proteins. This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reactions. Restylane® and Perlane® contain trace amounts of gram-positive bacterial proteins and are contraindicated for patients with a history of allergies to such material. No allergy testing is required before use.

Perlane® is composed of larger gel particles than Restylane® and is intended for deeper injection to add volume for structural support and lift. In all cases, the procedure is non-surgical, and the results are virtually instantaneous. The availability of both products provides the physician with different treatment options. You and the physician can best determine the optimal treatment amount.

Restylane® and Perlane® are proven to deliver long-lasting results. Studies have shown that Restylane® lasts about six months. Perlane® lasts at least six months in a majority of patients. The patented stabilization technology helps maintain the cosmetic effect for those time periods. How long the aesthetic correction lasts is very individual.

Because Restylane® and Perlane® do not require an allergy test and can be administered immediately, there is no waiting for treatments. Before being treated with Restylane® and Perlane® you should take a few precautions. Prior to treatment, avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John's wort, or high doses of Vitamin E supplements. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, discuss this with the doctor, who may prescribe a medication to minimize recurrence.

Restylane® and Perlane® are injected directly into the skin in small amounts by an ultrafine needle. As with all injections, some patients may experience discomfort. To increase your comfort, the doctor will assess your need for pain management and determine what technique is right for you. After your treatment with Restylane® or Perlane®, you may have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, and tenderness. This will normally last less than seven days. Cold compresses (a cloth dipped in cold water, wrung out, and applied to the injected area) may be used immediately after treatment to reduce swelling. Avoid touching the treated area within six hours following treatment, so you do not accidentally injure your skin while the area is numb. After that, the area can be gently washed with soap and water. Until there is no redness or swelling, it is advisable to avoid exposure of the treated area to intense heat (sun lamp or sunbathing).

Juvéderm™

Juvéderm™ is a smooth consistency gel made of hyaluronic acid – a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration. Hyaluronic acid is a substance found in all mammals that helps to hydrate and add volume to your skin. In addition to its use as an aesthetic treatment, hyaluronic acid has also been used for more than 20 years for injection into arthritic joints to aid movement as well as for eye surgeries and wound repair. The Hyaluronic acid in Juvéderm™ is specially cross-linked. “Uncross-linked” hyaluronic acid in its natural form is in a liquid state. “Cross-linking” is the process through which hyaluronic acid is made into a gel product that can be injected into the skin for long-lasting results.

Juvéderm™ is indicated for injection into the mid to deep dermis for correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds. The healthcare professional eases Juvéderm™ injectable gel under the skin to instantly restore your skin's volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds, like your "smile lines" or “parentheses” (nasolabial folds – the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth).

Juvéderm™ provides a smooth, natural look and feel - so everyone will notice (but no one will know!)

Juvéderm™ injectable gel is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is proven to be safe and effective for persons of color. Juvéderm™ is also the only hyaluronic filler FDA approved to last up to 1 year.

With Juvéderm™ the injection process takes only about 15 - 30 minutes and results are immediate. Plus, there's minimal recovery or downtime. So you can step into our office for treatment and step right back into your life.

Most side effects are mild or moderate in nature, and their duration is short lasting (7 days or less). The most common side effects include, but are not limited to, temporary injections site reactions such as redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration. As with all skin injection procedures there is a risk of infection.

Juvéderm™ injectable gel is available in two formulations to allow the healthcare professional to tailor treatment to your unique needs. Juvéderm™ Ultra provides versatility in contouring and volumizing facial wrinkles and folds. Juvéderm™ Ultra Plus is a more robust formulation for volumizing and correcting deeper folds and wrinkles.
